THE FREELY MADE June 28th-July 2
Instructors: Bianca Beck
The mark, the stroke, the brush, the drip -- the motions of art making created the movement of Abstract Expressionism. Students will explore the materiality of paint, a variety of tools for its application, and different painting surfaces. We will discuss the topics of composition and inspiration; and students will be encouraged to speak about their artworks and to share their observations and thoughts. We will be looking at the work of artists such as Franz Kline and Joan Mitchell.
SCULPTURE AND ASSEMBLAGE July 5-9
Instructors: Samara Kupferberg/Bianca Beck
Build new worlds! Using found, recycled, and repurposed objects and materials, students will investigate methods of construction and let their imaginations take over. Projects will also include paper folding and cutting, and papier mache. Artists such as Joseph Cornell, Mark Dion, and Claes Oldenburg will be discussed.
LIGHT July 26-30
Instructors: Bianca Beck/Samara Kupferberg
When the sun shines through a stained glass window or creates a rainbow through a prism, light is a magical experience. In this class, students will create artworks that use light as a key ingredient -- as well as translucent, transparent, and reflective materials. Projects will range from creating sun catchers to putting on a collaborative light show!
PIRATE BOOTY, AMERICAN GIRLS, AND STAR WARS July 19-23
Instructors: Bianca Beck/Brendan Evans
Sound familiar? Pop culture permeates our daily lives and is often the subject matter in many children's artworks. Now a tradition, the artists of the Pop art movement used advertising, comic books, and everyday objects as material for their artworks too! We will be looking at this history while creating fun and contemporary works of art in a variety of media.
FIBER ARTS July 12-16
Instructors: Samara Kupferberg/Bianca Beck
Touchable, textural fibers of many kinds will be the basis of this camp, as well as experimenting with dyes, batik, weaving, embroidery, and felting. We will discover the great variety of materials which fall under the category of fiber, and see what can be done with them.
ORDINARY TO EXTRAORDINARY Aug 2-6
Instructors: Samara Kupferberg/Brendan Evans
Inspiration surrounds us when we allow objects from our daily lives to change their context and become art materials! Students will learn about many forms of folk and outsider art and create work that incorporates themes and materials from their everyday lives.
KEEPING A RECORD Aug 9-13
Instructors: Samara Kupferberg/Brendan Evans
Students will create a series of handmade books as they learn different binding and crafting techniques. By the end of the week kids will have an impressive array of personal artist's books. Each book will be unique, inside and out. We will discuss the idea of keeping journals and sketchbooks as a collection of experiences.
DRAWING Aug 16-20
Instructors: Samara Kupferberg/Brendan Evans
Going beyond markers and white paper, students will practice their drawing skills as they learn advanced mark making techniques and try out an expanse of materials. Observation and attention to detail will be emphasized. We will also explore the use of color, design, and composition. Both abstract and representational drawing will be encouraged.
SPIRIT OF FLUXUS Aug 23-27
Instructors: Bianca Beck/Rebecca Gilbert
The Fluxus artists of the 1960's saw art and artist and life and audience as continuous. This is an intermedia class where students will collaborate, experiment, and play with sound, movement, poetry, collage, and assemblage. We will be looking at the work and ideas of artists such as Yoko Ono and Allan Kaprow.
GO WILD! Aug 30- Sep 3
Instructors: Bianca Beck/Rebecca Gilbert
Nature is the starting point for all art, in both materials and inspiration. Children will create artworks using sticks, rocks, fruits, vegetables, and more! We will be looking at Earth art -- including cave paintings and the work of artists like Andy Goldsworthy.
