SUMMER CAMP 2012
July 2 - August 31

Printmaking
July 2 - 6

Students will utilize a variety of printmaking processes to create a series of repeatable prints as well as several one-of-a-kind prints. Traditional methods such as relief and mono-printing will be taught, in addition to new and experimental approaches. We will print with many natural and found objects to see what kinds of textures we can find. The class will include a survey of printmaking’s amazing history along with its role in some of our favorite storybooks and pictures. Projects will be inspired by artists such as Katsushika Hokusai and Kiki Smith.


Color July 9 - 13
Discover the magic and meaning of color! Students will create a rainbow of artworks while exploring color's powerful ability to express feelings, memories, and imaginings. Info sessions will teach basic color theory - such as color interactions, the color wheel, and color mixing. We will also investigate the important roles that light and transparency play. This is a multimedia class. Projects will draw inspiration from artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Henri Matisse, Josef Albers, and Bridget Riley.


Paper Arts July 16 - 20
Unfold the endless creativity and beauty of paper! Students will make and dye their own paper and use our abundant collection of papers to create two and three dimensional artworks throughout the week. Projects will include papier-mache, handmade books, and much more! Advanced techniques such as quilling and origami will be taught. Special attention will be given to paper cutting, folding, and constructing - and as always, experimental methods will be encouraged.


Collage July 23 - 27
More than any other form of art, the kids have told us that collage is their favorite! Inspired by this we've decided to dedicate an entire camp this year to all things collage. During the week we will look at the vast world of collage - kids will learn how to make seamless photomontages, decoupages, decollages, and assemblages, as well as create traditional collages with our many unique papers and fabrics. Kids will also collaborate to create a small series of sound collages on a four track mixer.


Life & Performance July 30 - August 3
The Fluxus artists of the 1960's saw art and artist and life and audience as continuous. This is an intermedia performance class where students will collaborate, choreograph, improvise, and play with sound, movement, objects, and poetry. During the week we will hold a series of interviews with the children to discuss their ideas on art and life. We will be looking at the work and ideas of artists such as Yoko Ono and Yvonne Rainer.


Nature Folk August 6 - 10
Working with seeds, sticks, stones, plants, and other materials found out in the woods, as well as some things from the urban landscape, students will make artworks that focus on both material exploration and crafting techniques. Projects will range from the whimsical to the utilitarian. We will be looking at great outsider artists such as Judith Scott and Bill Traylor.


Drawing & Painting Techniques August 13 - 17
Students will practice their drawing and painting skills as they learn advanced mark making techniques and try out a variety of materials. Experimentation, observation, and attention to detail will be emphasized. We will also explore the use of color, design, and composition. Both abstract and representational endeavors will be encouraged. We will also be looking at unusual techniques in artworks by artists such as Max Ernst and Helen Frankenthaler.


Surrealism 200 August 20 - 24
Step into the infinite and bizarre land of surrealism - where dreams, chance, and the absurd reign supreme! During the week students will delve into the depths of their imaginations and beyond. Students will be encouraged to experiment with a wide variety of surrealist methods and media - from plaster gauze and solar prints to automatic drawing and juxtaposed realities. We will be looking at the work and ideas of surrealist artists such as Eileen Agar and Greta Knutson.


Junk & Upcycling August 27 - 31
Upcycling is the practice of taking things around the home that are no longer in use and transforming them into new and exciting creations. Using junk as a starting point, students will transform plastic, cardboard, and other found objects into a pile of wonders! Projects will include: bottle robots, cardboard sculptures, newspaper bead necklaces, t-shirt stuffed animals, and much more!

THURSDAY AFTERNOON ALL AGES CLASS:

4-5 pm every Thursday from July 7th- September 1st
$20 per class or $160 for 9 weeks. Siblings half price for this class only!


3D BUILDERS: JULY 5TH-8TH

Ascend to new heights! In this sculpture class, students will build up, over, and beyond. New, found, and repurposed materials will be used to create free-standing sculptures, mobiles, and wall assemblages. Balance, depth, and height will be tackled as we create new worlds and investigate methods of construction. Artists such as Louise Nevelson and Alexander Calder will be discussed.


PICASSO & MATISSE: JULY 11TH-15TH

Two greats in the history of art, Picasso and Matisse were both prolific innovators and changed how the eye perceives the world. We will be looking at their work and ideas, and projects will spring from their wide range of creations. This is a multimedia class with an emphasis on painting.


PERFORM!: JULY 18TH-22ND

Dance, sing, move, stand, gesture, say, create! In this performance art class children will choreograph, improvise, and perform a range of artistic events. Students will collaborate, experiment, and play with sound, movement, objects, and poetry. We will be looking at the work and ideas of artists such as Yoko Ono and Yvonne Rainer.


DECORATION & ADORNMENT: JULY 25TH-29TH

Embracing glitz, glimmer, patterns, and the ornate, we will focus on the details and extravagance of decoration. Taking inspiration from highly ornamented styles and periods of art (such as Rococo and Mexican folk art) kids will work on projects ranging from jewel encrusted sculptures to glittery wallpapers and more! And more! And more!


SURREALISM: AUGUST 1ST-5TH

Students will study the intriguing work of artists such as Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Max Ernst, and Man Ray. During the week we will create paintings of dreams and juxtaposed realities, learn to make seamless photo montages, and work on a series of collaborative drawings and writings, known as Exquisite Corpses. Kids will also be introduced to a variety of Chance Art techniques, such as Frottage- drawings inspired by texture rubbings.


COLOR: AUGUST 8TH-12TH

Students will produce mind dazzling effects using line and color. We will try out some amazing color experiments based on the teachings of Josef Albers, and see the awesome illusions which occur when certain colors interact. We will practice color mixing and think about how the use of color affects the mood of our work. Kids will surely be inspired by the exciting paintings of artists such as Victor Vaserely, Ellsworth Kelley, and Bridget Riley.


THE WARPED LINE: AUGUST 15TH-19TH

Delving deeper into the practice of weaving, kids will investigate advanced techniques such as tapestry weaving and hand painted warps. We will also experiment with dyeing our own yarn using both natural and chemical dyes. In addition, kids will create a simple drawing on fabric and learn to trace over the lines with embroidery stitches, eventually turning it into a finished pillow to bring home.

*This camp is ideal for kids with some weaving experience, but may be taken by beginners as well.*


HANDMADE BOOKS: AUGUST 22ND-26TH

Students will create a number of unusual books as they learn different binding and crafting techniques. By the end of the week the kids will have an impressive array of personal artists books. Each book is sure to be unique, inside and out, as children are encouraged to think about the construction, as well as the content, of their creations.


CRAFTY CREATURES: AUGUST 29TH-SEPTEMBER 2ND

In this multimedia class we will teach a variety of crafting techniques while creating a menagerie of monsters, beasts, and critters. Children's imaginations will run wild making a few new imaginary friends; images of real and mythical animals will also be provided for observation. With special attention given to learning the artistry of each crafting method, children will explore felting, papier-mache, mosaics, paper folding and more.

THE FREELY MADE June 28th-July 2
Instructors: Bianca Beck
The mark, the stroke, the brush, the drip -- the motions of art making created the movement of Abstract Expressionism. Students will explore the materiality of paint, a variety of tools for its application, and different painting surfaces. We will discuss the topics of composition and inspiration; and students will be encouraged to speak about their artworks and to share their observations and thoughts. We will be looking at the work of artists such as Franz Kline and Joan Mitchell.

SCULPTURE AND ASSEMBLAGE July 5-9
Instructors: Samara Kupferberg/Bianca Beck
Build new worlds! Using found, recycled, and repurposed objects and materials, students will investigate methods of construction and let their imaginations take over. Projects will also include paper folding and cutting, and papier mache. Artists such as Joseph Cornell, Mark Dion, and Claes Oldenburg will be discussed.

LIGHT July 26-30
Instructors: Bianca Beck/Samara Kupferberg
When the sun shines through a stained glass window or creates a rainbow through a prism, light is a magical experience. In this class, students will create artworks that use light as a key ingredient -- as well as translucent, transparent, and reflective materials. Projects will range from creating sun catchers to putting on a collaborative light show!

PIRATE BOOTY, AMERICAN GIRLS, AND STAR WARS July 19-23
Instructors: Bianca Beck/Brendan Evans
Sound familiar? Pop culture permeates our daily lives and is often the subject matter in many children's artworks. Now a tradition, the artists of the Pop art movement used advertising, comic books, and everyday objects as material for their artworks too! We will be looking at this history while creating fun and contemporary works of art in a variety of media.

FIBER ARTS July 12-16
Instructors: Samara Kupferberg/Bianca Beck
Touchable, textural fibers of many kinds will be the basis of this camp, as well as experimenting with dyes, batik, weaving, embroidery, and felting. We will discover the great variety of materials which fall under the category of fiber, and see what can be done with them.

ORDINARY TO EXTRAORDINARY Aug 2-6

Inspiration surrounds us when we allow objects from our daily lives to change their context and become art materials! Students will learn about many forms of folk and outsider art and create work that incorporates themes and materials from their everyday lives.

KEEPING A RECORD Aug 9-13
Instructors: Samara Kupferberg/Brendan Evans
Students will create a series of handmade books as they learn different binding and crafting techniques. By the end of the week kids will have an impressive array of personal artist's books. Each book will be unique, inside and out. We will discuss the idea of keeping journals and sketchbooks as a collection of experiences.

DRAWING Aug 16-20
Instructors: Samara Kupferberg/Brendan Evans
Going beyond markers and white paper, students will practice their drawing skills as they learn advanced mark making techniques and try out an expanse of materials. Observation and attention to detail will be emphasized. We will also explore the use of color, design, and composition. Both abstract and representational drawing will be encouraged.

SPIRIT OF FLUXUS Aug 23-27
Instructors: Bianca Beck/Rebecca Gilbert

This is an intermedia class where students will collaborate, experiment, and play with sound, movement, poetry, collage, and assemblage. We will be looking at the work and ideas of artists such as Yoko Ono and Allan Kaprow.

GO WILD! Aug 30- Sep 3
Instructors: Bianca Beck/Rebecca Gilbert
Nature is the starting point for all art, in both materials and inspiration. Children will create artworks using sticks, rocks, fruits, vegetables, and more! We will be looking at Earth art -- including cave paintings and the work of artists like Andy Goldsworthy.
